November 10, 2009 By Eamonn Forde Forrester’s latest report on digital media consumption reveals that 14% of Europeans are buying music online, but 25% overall are interested in doing so. While this is encouraging and shows growth potential for digital, the report also found that 58% of those polled will not pay for any digital content, music or otherwise. The fact that over half of consumers are still not showing any interesting in paying for content online is a massive concern for all in the content and digital entertainment industries. There are a number of conversion barriers here and ease of use, price and how services are marketed are all impacting. The music industry is, however, ahead of other industries in driving consumer conversion from physical formats to digital. The study shows that only 8% of consumers have bought movies online and 23% would be interested in doing so. For eBooks, this drops to 4% of consumers buying books this way and 19% interested in or willing to do so. |
