French Police Raid Pirate Bollywood Store |
Action highlights the spread of Bollywood piracy in Europe
London, 18th February 2008 – French police have raided a store in Paris that sold large amounts of counterfeit Bollywood music and films. The Thamilan Music Centre was located in a primarily Tamil neighbourhood of the city. One man was arrested during the raid and held in police custody. Officers from the Police National Judiciaire raided the store on 13th February following a formal complaint from IFPI, which represents the recording industry worldwide. They seized an estimated 3,000 pirate CDs and more than 200,000 counterfeit DVDs manufactured in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

Brussels, 14th February 2008 – Artists and the international recording industry today warmly welcomed the announcement by EU Internal Market Commissioner, Charlie McCreevy, that he will shortly come forward with a proposal to ensure fairness on copyright term. Tens of thousands of performers, producers, music publishers and entertainment retailers have been calling for an improvement of copyright term in Europe to match the term provided by the EU’s major trading partners.

UK Goverment to Push for ISP Cooperation |

London, 12th February 2008 – The international recording industry today welcomed the news that the UK government plans to ensure that ISPs play a far bigger role in combating online music piracy. The news is a boost to the campaign for ISP cooperation that has wide support from across the creative industries. The move is a boost for the campaign for ISPs to cooperate with the music and film industries to protect creative content. It follows the Olivennes Agreement of late 2007, when French President Sarkozy worked with ISPs and the recording industry on a plan that will lead to the disconnection of persistent copyright infringers. Last year also saw the SABAM v Tiscali case in Belgium, when a court ruled that it was feasible and reasonable for the ISP to take measures to prevent illegal file-sharing on its network. |

McGuiness used his keynote speech at Midem’s international manager summit today (Monday) to ask governments around the world to enforce ISP responsibility, which he says is “not a luxury ; it is a necessity for implementation right now.”
