In December 2011, the City of London Police formally requested that MasterCard, PayPal and Visa cease providing payment facilities to 28 websites that sell copyright infringing music.  All three services complied immediately with the request.

“SONGS FOR JAPAN” HITS $10m MILESTONE
TOKYO, November 9, 2011 – Songs For Japan, the unique, star-studded album collection created to help raise money for victims of Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters, continues to benefit the survivors through Japanese Red Cross Society.

Yesterday in Tokyo, senior executives from four major music companies – EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music Group – met with Japanese Red Cross Society Vice President, Yoshiharu Otsuka, to recognise the milestone of $10 million raised and donated from the global sales of Songs For Japan.  The occasion was a reception hosted by Frances Moore, chief executive of worldwide recording industry organisation IFPI.

PhonepayPlus works with premium rate industry to combat infringing websites
London, 3rd November 2011 - PhonepayPlus, the body that regulates premium rate services (PRS) in the UK, is working with the City of London Police and IFPI, which represents the recording industry worldwide, to proactively prevent online copyright infringement.

Recording industry welcomes EU decision on copyright term extension
Brussels, 12th September 2011 - The international recording industry welcomed today's decision by the European Union to extend the term of copyright protection offered to performers and producers from 50 to 70 years.

The decision was applauded by Plбcido Domingo, chairman of IFPI, which represents the recording industry worldwide: "The decision to extend the term of protection for recordings in Europe is great news for performing artists. Artists at the start of their careers will benefit from an increased pool of revenue that will be available to invest in new talent. Established artists can benefit from their work throughout their lifetimes. This is especially important today when licensed digital services make music widely available online.

PayPal works with police and industry to tackle copyright infringing websites

21st July 2011 - Online payment service PayPal has agreed a partnership with City of London Police and the international recording industry that will see even stronger action to prevent PayPal's services being used by illegal websites worldwide that sell copyright infringing music. PayPal has always banned the use of PayPal for items that infringe or violate any copyright under its Acceptable Use Policy.

Record payout in Finnish hub operator case

27th January 2011 - A court in Finland has ordered two operators of an illegal DirectConnect hub to pay more than Ђ820,000 in compensation to rights holders for facilitating the illegal distribution of films, games and music. This compensation payout is the highest ever awarded in any case investigated by Finland's Copyright Information and Anti-Piracy Centre (CIAPC).

More than 3000 pirate discs destroyed by the Police in Smolian
